2007 A Busy Year For The Biggest Fastest Offshore Race Boats

Super Boat International/APBA Offshore kicked off the 2007 season early when we participated in the Super Bowl pre game events on February 3rd in Hollywood, Florida. It was a Chamber of Commerce day with exciting close racing between the thirty-two boats that competed on the five mile race course.

One of the most popular events is the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy live-action “Amphibious Assault.” Reconnaissance Marines in full battle gear will launch from one of the Navy’s amphibious assault ships, anchored off shore, and plow through the waves in amphibious vehicles for their assault on Fort Lauderdale’s beach.  A Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) will back the troops in the water and on shore.  They will get close air support from F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets, an AH-1W Cobra helicopter gunship and CH-46 helicopters. The next aircraft in support of the assault is the AV-8B “Harrier” which can take off and land vertically from short airstrips and roadways.

The USN LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion), an amphibious assault component for the Navy and Marine Corp, has many advantages over conventional hull displacement landing craft. The LCAC is more than four times faster than current landing craft and are capable of exceeding 40 knots on water and up to 25 knots on land. This performance is obtainable since the LCAC rides on a four foot cushion of trapped air and can operate in waters regardless of depth, waves, obstacles, or tides.

Ed Hamill has always dreamed of performing at air shows. At 16, he got his pilot's license and has been flying ever since. After watching an F-16 Fighting Falcon perform at an air show, Ed decided to follow a dream of becoming a fighter pilot. In 1989, one month after graduating from college, he was commissioned into the Air Force, entered pilot training in 1990 and earned his wings in 1991.

Mike found his passion for aviation at the age of 10 after his Dad took him to his first Air Show. At 14, Mike took a job at the Mason City Iowa airport washing airplanes and cleaning hangars just to be around airplanes. Later, he traded his work for flying lessons and received his Pilots License on his 17th birthday.

Thirty years later, Mike has accumulated more than 20,000 hours of flight time managing aircraft and flying for Corporate America. 3,500 hours of that flight time has been piloting some of the highest performance air show and competition aircraft in the world.

The Red Baron Pizza Squadron® has been thrilling millions of families across the United States with its exciting aerobatic maneuvers at air shows and public events for more than 25 years. Since 1979, the Red Baron Pizza Squadron® has kept the legend of the Baron alive with its fleet of vintage aircraft.

Fred Cabanas started flying at the age of 16 and has over 20,000 hours of total flight time. He holds his Airline Transport Pilot, Multi-Engine, Instrument, Commercial, and Seaplane rating. Fred also holds a Type Rating in the North American T-28, and Hawker Sea Fury. While attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fred earned his Air Frame and Power Plant License. Fred is also an Aerobatic Competency Evaluator, which enables him to issue low-level waivers.

The United States Army Sky Soldiers Precision Flight Demonstration Team is a dedicated team of veteran pilots performing at various events around the country in support of the Army’s recruiting efforts.

History

In 1947, while the jet age was still in its infancy, military aviation was hurtled into the future with the creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate service. Just six years later, on May 25, 1953, the Air Force’s official air demonstration team, designated the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit, was activated at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.

Knights have traditionally been a symbol of valor and an embodiment of honor and courage. In today’s fast and sometimes frightening modern world we have retained our heroes. For the last fifty years the men and women of the U.S. Army Parachute Team, “Golden Knights” have been exemplifying these old norms through dedication to their service and country and their pursuit of perfection in the sport of skydiving has made them a force to be reckoned with.

The U.S. Navy Parachute Team (NPT) is a 15-member team comprised of parachuting experts from various specialties within the U.S. Navy. Those specialties include U.S. Navy SEAL (SEa, Air and Land), SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman) and Special Warfare PR (Parachute Rigger). Each member comes to the NPT for a three-year tour and returns to an operational unit upon completion of their time on the team.

The F-22 Raptor is the newest tactical fighter aircraft developed for the US Air Force for 2005 and is the world’s fist stealthy air dominance fighter, capable of multiple missions. This air-dominance airplane has air-to-ground capability, can destroy surface-to-air missile systems that no other airplane can, and is able to deal with emerging threats like cruise missiles. The Raptor can do the job not only of the F-15, but also the F-15E Strike Eagle and the F-117 Nighthawk, replacing virtually three types of airplanes with a fleet less than half its former size.

The 93rd Fighter Squadron (the “Makos”), operating out of Homestead Air Reserve Station, flies and maintains the F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft. Inactivated during the post-war 1950s, the 93rd Fighter Squadron was reactivated in October 1978 at then Homestead Air Force Base, flying F-4C Phantom II fighter aircraft. Now flying the F-16C model, these planes can be identified by the letters “FM” for “Florida Makos.”

The B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber is a multi-role bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions. Providing the penetrating flexibility and effectiveness inherent in manned bombers, its low-observable (or "stealth") characteristics give it the unique ability to penetrate an enemy's most sophisticated defenses and threaten its most valued, and heavily defended, targets.

Designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat, the F-15 Eagle is an all-weather, highly maneuverable tactical fighter. It can penetrate enemy defense and outperform and outfight any current enemy aircraft. During the Gulf War, the Eagle was considered the country’s most accurate fighter.

The A-10/OA-10 is a simple, survivable twin-engine jet that was specially designed for close support of ground forces. It has excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude, they are highly accurate weapons-delivery vessels, and can be used against all ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles.

The nation’s first strike-fighter, the F-18 Super Hornet is an all-weather aircraft and used as an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. In its attack mode, it is utilized for force projection, interdiction and close and deep air support, but in its fighter mode, the F-18 is employed primarily as a fighter escort and for fleet air defense. With its excellent fighter and self-defense capabilities, the Hornet increases strike mission survivability and supplements the other Military aircrafts in fleet air defense at the same time.

The multi-mission B-1B Lancer is the backbone of America’s long-range bomber force. It is a highly versatile, multi-mission weapon system that can rapidly deliver massive quantities of precision and non-precision weapons against any adversary. The B-1B Lancer holds 43 world records in various categories including speed, payload, range and time of climb. It was first used in combat in 1998 in support of the operations against Iraq in Operation Desert Fox.

In 1997, the Air Force established the USAF Heritage Flight program in celebration of its 50th Anniversary as a separate branch of the U.S. Military. The mission of the Heritage Flight is to display the evolution of the United States Air Force Airpower and to aid in the Air Force’s recruiting and retention efforts. By Air force regulation, only 18 pilots are allowed in the Heritage Flight program.

The 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. is an Air Force Reserve Command combat search and rescue unit. It trains and equips about 1200 personnel to search for, locate and recover U.S. Armed Forces personnel during military operations.
